The team has qualified for regionals for the last two seasons and it may have the strength to make it to nationals this year, Kaufman said.

The United States Walker Cup team has been given their first glimpse of the Royal Aberdeen course ahead of their showdown with Great Britain and Ireland this weekend.

“It would probably favour the GB&I team a little more if it is like that but I don’t think my guys are going to be afraid of the weather.

“This is the third time I have played the course and the conditions have been perfect each time. I would like to play it in a 30mph wind and see just how tough it really is. I guess we have to wait and see what the rest of the week has in store.”

The Presidents Cup, a biennial teams event between the US and an International team that will include at least two Australians, is to be played at Royal Melbourne's composite course from 16-20 November.

Qualifying will be completed over the next fortnight, with the top 10 players on world rankings (non-European and non-US) to be automatic selections for Greg Norman's International team. The first 10 US players are chosen from a points system over the previous 12 months.
