Fred Couples says Tiger Woods is on the President's Cup team.

Fred Couples is the non-playing captain of the U.S. team that will face a squad of non-European international players Nov. 17-20, at Royal Melbourne in Australia.

"I told him he's going to be on the team," Couples said Thursday at the TPC Snoqualmie Ridge in a pretournament interview for the Boeing Classic.

Couples said his statement weeks ago that Woods should play at least one U.S. tournament in future weeks isn't a requirement for being considered for the team but a captain-to-player request to make sure Woods' game is sharp.

Couples said he and assistant captain Jay Haas "want him on the team — it's pretty simple."

Couples said, "There's no reason to wait until Sept. 26 to pick Tiger. He's the best player in the world forever."

As captain, Couples gets to pick two players for the team to join 10 players who automatically qualify based on points accumulated over the past two years.

Couples acknowledged that Woods, who missed the cut at the PGA Championship, isn't in top form now but said, "He's going to be ready. The last thing he wants to do is embarrass himself. I think he'll be ready to play ... I expect him to be sharp and ready to play, and I would be shocked if he's not."

Couples also said he has a pairing in mind for Woods for the two-man events. He declined to say what it was, but Woods and Steve Stricker went 3-0 in 2009 when the Couples-captained team beat the international squad at Harding Park Golf Club in San Francisco.
