The second round of the U.S. Amateur on Tuesday featured a lengthy weather delay and conditions that bordered on sinister, but Geyer went out and torched Erin Hills anyway, firing a blistering 6-under par 66.

“I told my brother coming down the (par-5) 18th that if I birdie this hole, I am pretty sure that will be the lowest score of the tournament,” said Geyer, who drained a 10-footer to finish out. “I didn’t think a score like that was out considering how much the wind was howling out there.”

Geyer wasn’t the only one to post a 66 at Erin Hills. Former Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Mike Ignasiak matched the round after blitzing the course’s front nine in 6 under. Korea’s Sunil Jung posted the day’s low number with a 5-under 65 at Blue Mound Golf and Country Club.

The top 64 golfers will advance to head-to-head competition, which will conclude Sunday with a 36-hole final match.

Blake Biddle of St. Charles, Ill., made the turn at Blue Mound in the lead at 8 under, though the UNLV sophomore has yet to complete his second round. He is one stroke ahead of Geyer, Beau Hossler and Blayne Barber; all three finished before play was suspended. The 45‑year-old Ignasiak, who pitched for the Brewers from 1991 to ’95, is at even par — a score that, at this point, would lead to a playoff to make the final 64.

“This is a great tournament for getting a feel on how a course is going to play for the world’s best players,” Davis said. “It has a firmness to it that’s hard to find in the Midwest and an ever-present wind that players really have to factor.”

So far Davis is impressed with what he’s seen.

“This course can play all that you want it to play,” Davis said.

While the PGA Championship has been held at Whistling Straits in Kohler twice in the past decade, including last year, the 2017 U.S. Open will mark the first time the USGA’s premier tournament will set up shop in the Wisconsin. Davis said the course was the determining factor on the decision to bring an Open to the heartland.

“It’s going to be a fabulous venue because of the space available and the abundance of natural vistas for spectators,” Davis said. “The fact that it is located in middle America is just an added bonus for us.”
