Passion for golf is the key to memorable triumph

MICHAEL Stewart last night heaped praise on Nigel Edwards after Great Britain & Ireland recorded their first Walker Cup win in eight years.

The Welshman had come in for criticism in the build up to the event after the controversial decision to omit David Law, the two-time Scottish champion and a Royal Aberdeen member, from the ten-man team.

Stewart, who picked up two-and-a-half points from his four matches, played down the fact GB&I had managed to beat an American team reckoned to be one of the strongest in the event's history. "We didn't think at any point that we were underdogs," added the 21-year-old. "We never paid any attention to what others were saying. We focused on what we were doing and it paid off."

Edwards said he had told his players to ignore the hype about an American side that contained the world's top four players as well as two winners on the Nationwide Tour this year.

"I knew what people had been saying and what had been written but I told the players to focus on what they were doing and forget about anything else," he added. "They have proved this week they are special people. They are a credit to themselves, their families and their countries."

Edwards said the two squad sessions he had held at Royal Aberdeen had paid dividends, especially as the Americans were blown off course by a strong wind yesterday morning.

"We prepared properly," he said. "That was the whole idea of asking the R&A if we could come here twice. We were used to the conditions out there and the boys did brilliant today."

Englishman Stiggy Hodgson was the sole survivor from the GB&I team that had lost heavily at Merion two years ago and he said: "Two years ago it really hurt but this is unbelievable and it couldn't have happened to a better bunch of players."

Jim Holtgrieve, the US captain, admitted his players had struggled in the wind as they lost the second-day foursomes 3.5-0.5. "Even though we had played in similar conditions, I think it takes time to get used to them," he said. "They (GB&I are used to these conditions and I think that maybe gave them an edge. Some of the shots we hit should probably have been run a little bit more, but that's experience."

On a day that was marred by vandals and heavy rain, England's Simon Dyson shot an opening round of five-under 65 on Thursday to tie for the lead with Marcel Siem.

Play was delayed for 45 minutes after vandals dug up parts of the greens on the fourth, fifth, sixth and ninth holes at the Hilversumsche Golf Club. To add insult to injury, torrential rain caused some flooding to the course resulting in a delay in play of more than three hours.

Dyson, who won the event in 2006 and 2009 on the Kennemer course, had an eagle at the 484-yard, par-five 12th and finished with five birdies and two bogeys. Germany's Marcel Siem also had an eagle on the 12th and finished with four birdies and a bogey in his 65.

Defending champion and world number three Martin Kaymer struggled to a four-over par round of 74.

In the end, play had to be called off because of darkness and 78 players were unable to complete their first round as a result.

Lee Westwood, who won the tournament in 1999, had back-to-back bogeys on holes five and six. He had birdies on the next two holes before play was suspended.

US Open champion Rory McIlroy got off to a slow start, with a bogey five on the third hole. He was one-over after eight holes before play ended.

Rory McIlroy Targets World No.1 Spot

On 19 June 2011, Rory McIlroy won the U.S. Open, his first major. He finished with a record score of 16-under-par on his way to an eight-shot victory, as the youngest winner since Bobby Jones in 1923. He has been cited as the most exciting young prospect in golf and having the potential to become one of the highest earners in sports in terms of endorsements.

Rory McIlroy insists he is not desperate to become world No. 1, but hopes to achieve the goal by the end of 2012. In this article, you may find the news about Rory McIlroy. If you are looking for good wholesale golf equipment, I would like to recommend the good R11 Driver to you.

The 22-year-old claimed his first major at the US Open and has climbed to No. 4 in the world.

He finished third at the European Masters at the weekend in his first appearance since injuring his wrist at the US PGA Championship, and will now look to kick on at the KLM Open in the Netherlands.

With world No. 2 Lee Westwood and No. 3 Martin Kaymer in action at the Hilversumsche Golf Club this week, McIlroy is intent on overhauling Kaymer and closing the gap between him and Westwood.

"I'm not desperate, but it's definitely a goal that I've set for myself," he said of the No. 1 ranking. "I feel as if it's very attainable.

"It might not be this year, but definitely into next year, I can give myself a very good platform to kick off the season next year if I end the season well.

"So all I want to do is try and get closer to Lee, obviously at No. 2 and then to look at No. 1 Luke [Donald]'s got a little bit of a lead at the minute and it would be nice to get closer to him."

Lee Westwood to spearhead GB’s Seve Tilt

Lee Westwood is an English professional golfer. Noted for his consistency, Westwood is one of the few golfers who has won tournaments on every major continent, including victories on the European Tour and the PGA Tour.

In this article, you may find the news about Lee Westwood. If you are looking for good wholesale golf clubs, I would like to recommend the good Cheap R11 Driver and G15 Driver to you.

WORLD No2 Lee Westwood will be the biggest threat in a depleted Great Britain and Ireland side bidding to retain the Seve Trophy in Paris next week.

The holders have been hit hard by a spate of withdrawals, which will deprive them of four of the world’s top 20 in Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell and Paul Casey, as well as Justin Rose and Martin Laird.

However, captain Paul McGinley can still call on Ian Poulter, Open champion Darren Clarke and 2009 veterans Simon Dyson, Robert Rock and Ross Fisher for the biennial contest.

Continental Europe, led by Dutchman Jean van de Velde, boast the most in-form man on the European Tour, Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn, and Italian wonderkid Matteo Manassero, who becomes the competition’s youngest ever player at 18 years, 152 days.

Also looking to end Great Britain and Ireland’s run of five successive victories will be Spain’s Alvaro Quiros, Italian Ryder Cup star Francesco Molinari and Bjorn’s countryman Anders Hansen.

The Seve Trophy takes place at St-Nom-La-Breteche from 15 September.

US Ready for Walker Cup

US captain Jim Holtgrieve in confident mood ahead of prestigious amateur golf match, he believes his side can cope with the pressure of being favourites.

In this article, you may find the news about United States Walker Cup. If you are looking for good wholesale golf clubs, I would like to recommend the good G15 Driver and R9 Driver to you.

The United States Walker Cup team has been given their first glimpse of the Royal Aberdeen course ahead of their showdown with Great Britain and Ireland this weekend.

The ten-man team played two rounds on the course on Monday as they look to win the coveted trophy for the fourth time in a row.

US non-playing captain Jim Holtgrieve says his team is comfortable with going into the match regarded as favourites.

He said: “We have got a good team but when you get into a match-play competition any team can win. I hope we come here and play golf in the spirit of what the Walker Cup is all about.

“We get to come and play where golf was born and we are going to do our best to win. The guys on my team are very competitive but they have also come here to meet new people and get an experience of a lifetime.”

Crowds of around 6000 are expected on both days at Royal Aberdeen for the match, regarded as the most prestigious event on the amateur golf circuit.

Holtgrieve, who played in three victorious US Walker Cup teams, says his side can cope with the pressure of playing in front of packed galleries at the challenging links course.

He said: “We are going to talk about the crowds and we will show the guys some of the tapes from the matches at Royal County Down in 2007 so they get a flavour of how the home patrons root for the home team.

He added: “I have been listening to my guys and they have been saying that they hope to see some of the wind and rain and find out what golf in Scotland is really all about.

“It would probably favour the GB&I team a little more if it is like that but I don’t think my guys are going to be afraid of the weather.

“This is the third time I have played the course and the conditions have been perfect each time. I would like to play it in a 30mph wind and see just how tough it really is. I guess we have to wait and see what the rest of the week has in store.”

Thomas Bjorn Celebrates Victory in the European Masters

Now, there are lots of golf news about Thomas Bjorn’s victory!

Thomas Bjorn can appear a charisma-free zone, a veritable block of Scandinavian ice, but at least the Dane betrayed a semblance of a softer side after the 62 that propelled him to a second straight European Tour title.

In this article, you may find the news about Thomas Bjorn’s Victory. If you are looking for good wholesale golf equipment, I would like to recommend the good TaylorMade R9 Driver for sale and K15 Driver to you.

“I’m a golfer who sometimes is accused of not looking too happy on the course,” he said, as he studied the giant European Masters trophy he had earned for a consummate 10-under-par final round in the Swiss Alpine rain. “But I’m very focused.”

Too right, he is. Bjorn was positively majestic in swatting away the challenges of Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood, exhibiting sumptuous iron play to reach 20 under par, four shots clear of nearest pursuer Martin Kaymer.

“Golf is pretty easy at the moment,” Bjorn said. “There is an awful long way to that,” said Bjorn, who last represented Europe in 2002.

Bjorn is a complex soul, racked by regrets over his implosion in the 2003 Open at Sandwich and grieving over the loss this summer of his father, Hans. This veteran of the circuit stands as testament, though, to the theory that life in golf can begin at 40. Like his old mucker Darren Clarke, who has a Claret Jug to show for his fifth decade, he swaggers defiantly into the autumn of his career.

This event is fond of styling itself as an ersatz equivalent to its namesake at Augusta, bestowing upon Bjorn a red jacket in place of a green one. Still, there can be no doubt over the event’s prestige or its symbolic place in the legacy of Seve Ballesteros. On the par-four 18th, the peerless Spaniard contrived in 1993 one of the most audacious shots ever seen, laying the blade of his sand wedge wide open to project the ball over an eight-foot-high wall and on to the edge of a water-guarded green. Naturally, he holed the ensuing chip.

Ping G20 Driver Review

Today, golf game is hot! Whether you are a golfer or not you have probably heard of PING golf clubs. Ping is a popular maker of golf products and has been for many years. The Ping G15 series is one of the most popular golf clubs around the world.

Now, the Ping G20 series is newest and hottest! In this article, I would recommend Ping G20 driver to you!

PING’s new G20™ driver is good driver.

Calcavecchia and Triplett are part of a large and growing percentage of PING pros who have switched to the G20 driver, including Bubba Watson, Hunter Mahan, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Angel Cabrera. Mahan and Cabrera are among many staff players using one of seven new Anser Milled putters.

“We’re thrilled to see the G20 driver and Anser Milled putter contributing to our players’ success,” said John A. Solheim, PING Chairman & CEO. “At the tour level, every technological edge is critical, and both the G20 and Anser Milled putters offer performance benefits that have made an immediate impact on the game’s best players.”

In the G20 driver, external weighting in the large, forgiving head helps launch the ball high with low spin for maximum distance and accuracy by optimizing the CG location. PING’s proprietary high-balance-point shaft enables the golfer to swing a clubhead with more mass at the same speed, creating a higher MOI and generating faster ball speeds for long, straight drives. The G20 is PING’s first driver to be built with Ti 8-1-1, a titanium alloy that helps improve the weighting to better optimize the entire clubhead.

“From a fitting standpoint, we optimized the performance of the G20 driver by offering two versions of our high-balance-point shaft,” Solheim said. “Players can select the higher-launching standard TFC 169D shaft or the slightly heavier, lower-launching TFC 169D Tour version to achieve the launch characteristics that give them the best results.”

“Our research shows that improving consistency is the key to making more putts, and we do that by matching the putter’s balance with the golfer’s stroke type,” Solheim said. “In the Anser Milled Series we’ve updated the classic Anser design and given golfers seven options so that every golfer can find a model that fits their eye and their stroke so they can make a lot more putts.”

And the Ping G20 Driver has a heavier head than G15 for greater force at impact. Additional backweighting and a more elongated face shore up misses.

The Ping G20 driver is good, you may buy it!!!
